It was, and probably still is (the record is no longer tracked), ‘Dinner For One‘, a 15 minute sketch filmed in 1963. The origins of the sketch date back to the 1920s, but in 1963, the sketch was filmed by the German television station Norddeutscher Rundfunk (I had originally assumed it was from the BBC) in black and white and shown on New Year’s Eve that year. Since then it has become a staple for New Year’s Eve in many countries around the world. Countries that regularly view the sketch are Germany, Norway, Sweden, Finland, Faroe Islands, Austria, German-speaking Switzerland, South Africa, Australia and more.
